This unique spring season includes two works by titans of 19th and 20th century ballet, Marius Petipa and Michel Fokine, and a revival of a Connecticut Ballet commission by a rising star in American dance.

Marius Petipa’s Raymonda is a full-length staple of the Russian ballet repertoire and provides an opportunity for the company’s soloists to show off their technical virtuosity. Rarely performed in its entirety in the West, the shorter RAYMONDA VARIATIONS is a suite of dances for a principal couple and corps de ballet drawn from Act III of the 1898 original. With music by Alexander Glazounov, the piece features sparkling classical solos and spirited group dances.

Darrell Grand-Moultrie’s ballet, PULSE , is a driving dance set to music by United Future Organization. Called a ‘rousing group work’ by Jack Anderson in The New York Times, the work was commissioned by Connecticut Ballet in 2000, the year he graduated from Juilliard School in his native New York. Grand-Moultrie subsequently went on to create works for Ailey 2, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, appeared on Broadway in Hairspray The Musical and Billy Elliot and was one of Beyonce’s choreographers for her Mrs. Carter World Tour.

Michel Fokine’s historic one-act ballet, PETROUCHKA , to music by Igor Stravinsky and scenic designs by Alexander Benois, was premiered in Paris in 1911 by Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. The ballet centers around Petrouchka, a clown-like puppet and takes place in St. Petersburg in 1830 at the Russian equivalent of Mardi Gras. The Connecticut Ballet premiere took place in 1997 with Raphael himself dancing the lead.

The special hour-long Mother’s Day Matinee of Petrouchka on May 13 is priced at $35.00 plus theatre surcharges and will feature a narrated introduction to the famous ballet. A meet-and-greet with the principal dancers follows in the Palace Theatre lobby.
